Driving in Portugal - it's easy

We recommend hiring a car at Faro airport. By the time you've added up airport transfers and taxi fares, and factored in the convenience of being able to shop and explore where and when you want, a hire car can make a lot of sense. Roads around Lagos are quieter than the UK, and drivers are generally laid back and relaxed

Hire car suppliers : We always hire via the Zest UK website, who provide good value rentals (which include Excess Insurance) from local companies Travelrent, Masterkings and Drive4fun located on Airport just 100 metres signposted flat walk from the terminal in a little white building in Car Park 4. No, we're not on commission, we just appreciate good honest service - in over 10 years we haven't had a problem. There is a 15 euro on-airport surcharge (worth it to avoid shuttle buses!).

NOTE as of January 2025 the A22 is now TOLL-FREE so there is no longer a transponder fee payable on car collection.

You have the option of paying 20-30 euros for a toll transponder, most of which is prepaid toll credit, if you wish to travel north away from the Algarve using the North-South A2 towards Lisbon. Do compare the small print between companies if your arrival is a late one - as of 2022 Travelrent is the best option for late arrivals in terms of out-of-hours pickup fees

Research:  Do some Trip Advisor forum reading if you've not rented a car before as some operators can be 'problematic' (any colour Car but Gold, spend more than a Cent!) - there will be a thread on every supplier in the TripAdvisor Faro forum - well worth checking.  Photographing all-round car condition on collection is advisable. Luzcar also have an office in Lagos if you wish to hire in-resort, or just ask Destination Algarve

Lagos is located at the western end of the Algarve, just under an hour from Faro airport along the usually empty A22 toll road. Lagos is at the end of the A22 - further towards the west coast the roads can get narrow and 'interesting'!

No car? : If you don't fancy a hire car Destination Algarve can arrange good value and timely private airport transfers. Lagos has a train station with direct trains from Faro, and the 2km taxi ride (Taxi Arade or Uber) between Casa Hugo and Lagos old town is less than 5 euros - relax!
