Centuries ago a shipwreck’s cargo of potatoes washed ashore here, and ever since this cove has been known as Potato Beach.
Overlooked by the statue of Sao Goncalo de Lagos, Patron Saint of Lagos, it’s easily accessed from Avenida dos Descobrimentos – the main road leading between the town and Ribeira de Bensafrim, or you can use the tunnel through the rock from Estudantes.
Sailing, kayaking and paddleboarding is based here, and there’s a nice shaded beach-level snack bar next door.
The beautifully preserved Forte da Ponta da Bandeira behind the beach dates from the 17th century and is open to visitors via the drawbridge for just a few euros – with modern artworks on display and great views through the arrow slits in the turrets it’s worth an hour’s visit. Pirates ahoy!
